Wikipedia

I just made a modification to a Wikipedia entry for the first time. My change was tiny (I fixed a typo), but I was amazed how thrilling it was to reload the page, see my contribution, and to know that the next person to read the article wouldn't stumble on the sentence I did. I was suddenly reminded of an interesting comment about the open source development process made in Microsoft's second halloween memo: "I'm a poorly skilled UNIX programmer but it was immediately obvious to me how to incrementally extend the DHCP client code (the feeling was exhilarating and addictive)."

Now I feel like writing some Wikipedia articles. I've got to hand it to the folks who came up with the Wiki concept. Considering that it even made me feel like writing, it's quite a slick bit of social engineering. :-)
