About a month ago I got a new hand pump for my bike, since my old one hurt my hand and was so bad as to be nigh-unusable. Like a fool, I just threw the new pump in my bike bag and carried on with my life.
This morning, about 5 blocks from home, I had a slow leak in my rear tire, so I pulled out the new pump for the first time. Guess what? It doesn't work at all!
After about 20 minutes of fussing, the back tire was completely out of air and I had just enough time to walk back home, shower, and drive to work. I hate it when that happens. I feel like I've betrayed my bicycling-to-work commitment. Also, I could have prevented this if I spent just five minutes trying out the bike pump after I bought it.
I wonder, if I didn't have a car to fall back on, would I learn to be more resourceful, or would I just be late to work more often?
